The best mulch depends on your landscape, budget, and the look you want to achieve. Here's a quick guide:

• Hardwood Mulch – A natural, long-lasting mulch that's great for flower beds, trees, and general landscaping. 
• Brown, Black, or Red Dyed Mulch – Offers the same benefits as natural mulch while providing long-lasting color to enhance your landscape. 
• Pine Mulch – Lightweight and ideal for shrubs, flower beds, and areas where a natural appearance is preferred. 
• Pine Nuggets – Larger pieces that break down more slowly, making them a great choice for around trees and decorative areas. 
• Playground Safety Mulch – Specifically designed for playgrounds and play areas to provide a safer surface.

Here are steps to help calculate the amount of product you will need for your project:

STEP 1:  Calculate the square footage for the entire area you want to cover.  

STEP 2:  Determine how deep your mulch should be, in feet.  First-time installations usually need to be 4” deep (1/3 foot). For pre-existing mulch beds, you may be able to get by with 2” deep (1/6 foot). 

STEP 3:  Multiply the area from Step 1 by the depth from Step 2, to obtain cubic footage of product needed. Divide this figure by 27 to convert into cubic yards (we sell mulch by the cubic yard). 

EXAMPLE: 

• A 20 foot x 30 foot plot has an area of 600 square feet:
  20 ft x 30 ft = 600 ft²
  
• To compute how much product is needed to install a 4" deep mulch bed for this plot, convert depth in inches into feet:
  4 inches make up 1/3 of a foot: 12 inches are in one foot, and the fraction 4/12 reduces to 1/3 (a simpler number than "0.333..." ft).
  
• Multiply the square footage of the area to be covered by the depth of product needed:
  600 ft² x 1/3 ft  = 200 ft³ (200 cubic feet)
  
• To convert into cubic yards, divide the number of cubic feet by 27 (every 27 ft³ = 1 yd³):
  200 ÷ 27 = 7.4
  
• The total amount of product needed is 7.4 yds³ (7.4 cubic yards).
  
  In this example, you would likely round up and order 8 cubic yards to make sure you have ample mulch for the entire project.

Wood mulch offers several advantages over shredded rubber mulch. As a natural product, wood mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, reduce weed growth, and gradually breaks down to add valuable nutrients back into the soil. It also promotes healthier plant growth and gives landscapes a more natural appearance.

While rubber mulch lasts longer, it does not improve soil quality or provide nutrients to plants. For most landscape beds around trees, shrubs, and flowers, wood mulch is the preferred choice for both the health of your landscape and its overall appearance.
